ABOUT YASMIN

A native Texan and a resident of Austin for 27 years, Yasmin is a child of immigrants and is the first Arab-American elected official in Austin. She has served as the District 7 Trustee of the Austin ISD Board since 2015.

She has been a committed community volunteer and advocate since adolescence. Her advocacy has centered around women, families and children which led her to volunteer in campus and district roles when her children were AISD elementary school students. She and her husband are the proud parents of a high school student and a 2020 AISD graduate. Yasmin is an alumna of the University of Texas at Austin and has worked in the communications and marketing field for nearly three decades.

ISSUES

Equitable Education
for All Students

Every child deserves an excellent education. All students have the potential for greatness, and we must ensure that every child is nurtured to achieve that possibility. This means that we have to continue to innovate and provide curriculum and programs that prepare our students for 21st century careers and cultivate a supportive and rewarding environment for our teachers and staff. It also means implementing the proper supports and programs to challenge every student to achieve their individual potential irregardless of their learning style, income, race or zip code.

Yasmin has been a vocal advocate for the addition of advanced academics and technology programs that provide a wider range of accessible options for Southwest Austin and all AISD students. She has also worked with district staff and advisors to develop and conduct a comprehensive equity study and an ensuing strategy for addressing inequities.

Educating
the Whole Child

We must meet the needs of every child by offering a true breadth of curriculum, encouraging creativity in learning, and effectively meeting the unique learning requirements of our special needs students. Social and emotional learning and cultural competence are key components to helping our students become confident and capable learners. We must also honor that our children need to be children with time for unstructured play in their school day and less stressful evaluation mechanisms that don't rely on overreaching and ineffective testing protocols.

Yasmin has advocated for more reading and language therapy programs in our schools, increased unstructured play time, and more widely implemented creative learning practices. She  participated in a convening of school districts from all over the US to discover how to better deliver social and emotional learning in all AISD schools.

Inspiring and Innovative Learning Environments

A school should provide an environment where children are inspired and safe. Over-enrolled and aging facilities cannot adequately meet the needs of readying our students for their futures nor are they sound financial investments for the district. A comprehensive and strategic plan for innovating and managing facilities is a necessity, including plans for addressing over- and under-enrollment, seeing through all bond projects in a timely manner and ensuring that geographically accessible programs are a priority in planning.

Yasmin has worked to finally move land negotiations for the South High School land purchase forward and has also been working to secure a site for a new Southwest elementary school. She has served as the board liaison to the Facilities and Bond Planning and Advisory Committee and has been a strong champion for their facilities planning work.
